Leslie Bohm founded Catalyst Communication in 1985 to help bicycle retailers and suppliers market their products. Catalyst has been serving the outdoor industry for a decade and now offers its marketing tools in the snow sports and running industries as well.
Over the years, Catalyst has helped thousands of small businesses create award-winning marketing. The marketing tools at Catalyst have always been about return on investment; we help retailers and suppliers present themselves as the leading experts, and we help them sell more. Catalyst continues to play a crucial role in helping the industry’s top retailers and suppliers.
The first Cycling Guides reached customers in 1986. Suppliers told their stories in a slick publication that reach their most qualified customers. This year, the Cycling Guide is evolving again, adopting a magazine style with more local information, so that the retailer’s business stands out as the local expert in the city.
Catalyst created the largest promotional event in the industry in SuperSale to inject the market with deals to create store traffic, both in early spring and late summer. Catalyst also created the Bicycle Business Conference, the first industry event to bring retailers and suppliers together to increase their efficiency and help them learn to work together better.
Now, Catalyst is putting that experience to work in creating BikeLife Cities, a magazine that is intended to target the 60% of people who consider themselves “interested but concerned,” vis-a-vis cycling. It will be mailed out to all or a large percentage of a participating city’s residents.
Throughout its history, Catalyst has supported bicycle and outdoor industry nonprofits and advocacy causes. Leslie Bohm was a founder of Bikes Belong (now People for Bikes) in the late 90s and remained active on the board until his death in 2012. Catalyst has led the way in advocacy efforts. From including postcards in its publications that are addressed to Senators and Congresspeople, to printing materials for various nonprofits, to continuous financial support for Bikes Belong, the International Mountain Bike Association, the Outdoor Industries Association, and numerous other nonprofits, Catalyst has been a leading supporter of the healthy lifestyles fostered by its chosen industries.
